During my studies I have soon been more fascinated by the biology of living cells rather than its applications to medicine. This led me to join the laboratory of Marino Zerial at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG) in Dresden (Germany) for my PhD where I studied the mechanisms of endocytosis and endocytic trafficking in mammalian cells. For my postdoc I got interested in bridging my knowledge as cell biologist to a context of development and I joined the group of Thomas Lecuit at the IBDM to study epithelial dynamics during morphogenesis, with a specific focus on the underlying cellular processes. After my recruitment at the CNRS in 2016 I have pursued my research at the interface between cell biology, development and biophysics. I’m interested in understanding how dynamic patterns of cell and tissue level contractility control epithelial morphogenesis by integrating genetic, mechanical and geometrical information. For that I use the Drosophila embryo as a model system.

Beyond the lab I am very much aware of our central role as researchers in the education of younger generations, as well as in the communication of our results amongst peers and to the general public. To that end, I actively participate to several science outreaching initiatives, such as Declics meetings in French high schools or the organization of journées portes ouvertes for students in our laboratories. I’m involved in the direction of students in the lab and I participate to the teaching of research activities at different levels. Last but not least, I have also participated to the organization of scientific conferences such as the French Drosophila Research Conference in 2018.

After many years of research at the bench and within our institute in Marseille, I wish now to give my contribution to the wider community of developmental biologists in France and abroad by dedicating some of my time to the growth of the SFBD. I participate regularly to the SFBD annual meetings and I particularly appreciate the dynamism and the plurality of the SFBD community which gathers developmental biologists in France and beyond. I think that the many activities of the SFBD aiming at supporting the growth of young scientists and networking opportunities between younger and more senior scientists are extremely valuable actions for the community. During my mandate I wish to continue supporting such efforts. I also wish to increase the visibility of the SFBD in France and abroad by promoting more joint meetings between the SFBD and other European developmental biology societies. Finally, I wish to bring to this community my vision, passion and expertise as a cell biologist, with the hope to further reinforce the bridge between the very close disciplines of cell and developmental biology. My motto is “To understand Development we need to study the underlying cellular activities and those can only be understood in the wider context of Development”.

In order to contribute to our developmentalist community and increase the visibility of our field, I would like to enter the SFBD board.

From the moment I discovered developmental biology during my bachelor in Toulouse, it became my main scientific interest. The idea that a whole individual originates from a single cell is truly fascinating, and trying to understand how this unique cell could give rise to drastically different organisms depending on cells behaviors was appealing.

It’s with this in mind that I looked for my first internship, and completely fell in love with developmental biology, leading me a few years later to a PhD in Magali Suzanne lab at the CBI of Toulouse. During my PhD, I studied the mechanical impact of Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) on tissue morphogenesis by dissecting the intracellular reorganizations occurring in the early stages of EMT in Drosophila melanogaster. In 2020, I was honored to receive the SFBD thesis prize for this work, and with this the opportunity to present my work during the SFBD meeting “From cell to embryo” in front of an audience of developmental biology specialists.

After my PhD defense, I joined Yohanns Bellaiche lab at the Curie Institute in Paris, where I am currently working on understanding the interplay between tissue compaction and cellular behaviors, such as cell division or cell death, during the development of the dorsal thorax of the fruit fly. Recently, I participated to public outreach, by presenting development biology and model organisms during the “Fête de la Sciences”. This interaction with families and children comforted me on the importance of developing outreach to increase the visibility of our discipline, and help people better understand the importance of studying developmental biology.

As a young researcher who benefited from the support of the society through a PhD award, I think that the work of the SFBD is essential to build up our community. Since 2016, I lead a research group, which focuses on the shape changes of the early mammalian embryo using live microscopy and biophysical approaches on mouse embryos, as well as to some extent in other mammalian species such as humans. We like to borrow concepts from soft matter physics and material sciences to describe embryos, as this is essential to understand how the embryo changes shape. This leads us to talk to scientists from very different backgrounds such as physicists, which is quite enriching. Recently, we also started working with medical doctors and we are happy to see how some of the concepts proposed by the lab could help improve the treatments of infertility.

The reason I would like to get more involved with the developmental biology community is that, as John Wallingford (almost) wrote in a beautiful piece in 2019: “If you want to know what gets me out of bed in the morning, most days it really is” preimplantation development! After 15 years doing research in developmental biology, I have very much enjoyed benefiting from the various events that our community has organized. Since 6 years that I do research in France, my team and I have also directly benefitted from the actions of the SFBD. I am simply keen to contribute and help keep this community as interesting and friendly as it is. I would also like very much to contribute making this community as welcoming as possible for the foreigners who honor us by joining the French research community. We need the best scientists to join us, wherever they come from! Finally, I would like to help making developmental biology more popular to other biologists and to the public. Since I am in France, I have taken every possible opportunities to talk to the public and made sure to pass on my passion for embryos. I would be glad to help further promote this aspect within the SFBD as well.

Mathilde PARIS, CR CNRS à l’IGFL (Lyon)

Je m’appelle Mathilde PARIS et je suis chercheure CNRS à l’IGFL (Lyon). Then, at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (Panama), I became interested in marine invertebrates, looking at protein evolution in sea urchins. During the Ph.D., I started focusing on the evolution of nervous systems in the solitary and colonial ascidian, juggling across the University of Padova, the Institut Alfred Fessard (Gif-sur-Yvette) and the University of Queensland (Australia). I got fascinated by the diversity and the plasticity of developmental pathways that characterize this group of chordates. Therefore, during my post-doctoral work at Stanford University (USA), at the Marine Biological Laboratory (USA) and at the UC Santa Barbara (USA), I continued working on different aspects of asexual development and regeneration of colonial tunicates. Rather than focusing on specific mechanistic aspects of development, I became progressively interested on how different developmental pathways can lead to the construction of similar structures, exploring the degrees of freedom and constraints that evolution foist to developmental processes. For this reason, when I joined the CNRS in 2010 leading my own research group at the Villefranche-sur-mer Developmental Biology Laboratory, I mainly keep using tunicates to compare whole-body regeneration and asexual development and to infer their evolution.

Since I’ve been exposed to a variety of academic and cultural environments, I believe that my international experience and my interests on “less characteristic” aspects of development, could bring different new perspectives and be of service for the SFBD. If elected, I would particularly like to enforce the outreach aspects of the Society. Particularly proposing means to share with non-scientific audience the basis of evolution and development as driving forces of life form diversity. I believe that, at this historical stage, the scientific popularization of these concepts and the promotion of scientific critical thinking is becoming for us more and more a duty.

Laurent YVERNOGEAU, CR INSERM, IBPS (Paris)

J’ai réalisé ma thèse en biologie du développement à l’université de Nantes en 2009 sous la direction de Josiane Fontaine-Pérus.
