His work was published in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.cub.2019.12.033\">Current Biology,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.devcel.2021.05.006\">Developmental Cell<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0959437X21001106?via%3Dihub\">Current opinion in Genetics and Development<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-022-31266-8\">Nature Communications<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.biologists.com\/dev\/article\/150\/13\/dev201747\/321184\/DeXtrusion-automatic-recognition-of-epithelial\">Development<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>\u2192 About the winner :<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12024 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sfbd.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/photo_perso-247x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"247\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sfbd.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/photo_perso-247x300.jpeg 247w, https:\/\/sfbd.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/photo_perso-768x934.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/sfbd.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/photo_perso.jpeg 804w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 247px) 100vw, 247px\" \/><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>During his PhD, Alexis exploited the\u00a0<i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">Drosophila<\/i>\u00a0pupal notum as a model system to study the phenomenon of epithelial cell extrusion, which allows dying cells to be eliminated while maintaining the integrity of the epithelial barrier. When a cell dies, its contraction brings the neighbouring cells together, thus avoiding the creation of a gap in the epithelium. Alexis focused on the link between extrusion and apoptosis, and notably on the caspases that regulate apoptosis. Careful quantitative characterisation of cell extrusion from live tissues allowed Alexis to demonstrate that apical constriction during cell extrusion is not initiated by changes of actomyosin, which is surprising since actomyosin is the main regulators of contractility. Instead, apical constriction is initiated by the caspase-driven disassembly of microtubules, whose role has never been described in this context. Alexis also used Bayesian inference to model cell sensitivity to caspases at the single cell level and showed that extrusion is linearly correlated with caspase concentration.
