Here are the seven candidates and their mission statements. All members of the Society will receive a link to vote (via the Pollen tool). Voting period will be December 2-15.<\/h6>\n<h4><strong>Fran\u00e7ois AGNES, Institut des Neurosciences de Paris-Saclay<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4121 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sfbd.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Francois_Agnes-300x266.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"266\">Je m\u2019appelle Fran\u00e7ois AGNES, j\u2019ai 53 ans. Je suis enseignant-chercheur \u00e0 l\u2019Institut des Neurosciences de Paris-Saclay dans l\u2019\u00e9quipe \u00ab D\u00e9veloppement et Evolution du Cerveau Ant\u00e9rieur \u00bb (resp. Sylvie R\u00e9taux). Je souhaite m\u2019investir dans le bureau de la SFBD pour faire vivre notre soci\u00e9t\u00e9 et d\u00e9velopper les projets qui l\u2019animent. Je suis int\u00e9ress\u00e9 par la promotion des jeunes talents et suis motiv\u00e9 pour participer \u00e0 des actions de communication visant \u00e0 faire conna\u00eetre notre discipline et ses enjeux aupr\u00e8s de diff\u00e9rents acteurs.<\/p>\n<p>Je connais notre communaut\u00e9 tant du point de vue de la diversit\u00e9 des \u00e9quipes et de ses mod\u00e8les d\u2019\u00e9tude que des approches techniques et conceptuelles. Au cours de ma carri\u00e8re, j\u2019ai \u00e9tudi\u00e9 diff\u00e9rents ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes de morphogen\u00e8se <i>in vivo<\/i> (suture \u00e9pith\u00e9liale, guidage axonal, apoptose d\u00e9veloppementale) avec le mod\u00e8le Drosophile. Je m\u2019int\u00e9resse actuellement \u00e0 la morphogen\u00e8se de l\u2019\u0153il, chez Astyanax mexicanus, une esp\u00e8ce de poissons (Tetra mexicain) qui existe sous deux formes, populations de rivi\u00e8res et populations cavernicoles&nbsp; aveugles. Je d\u00e9veloppe deux projets, l\u2019un concernant la r\u00e9gionalisation initiale de la plaque neurale ant\u00e9rieure (t\u00e9lenc\u00e9phale, \u0153il et hypothalamus pr\u00e9somptifs) par la d\u00e9finition d\u2019un atlas mol\u00e9culaire comparatif en 3D et l\u2019\u00e9tude des m\u00e9canismes d\u2019induction et l\u2019autre visant \u00e0 comprendre les bases cellulaires et d\u00e9veloppementales de l\u2019origine du colobome chez le poisson cavernicole par tracking cellulaire en 4D.<\/p>\n<p>J\u2019enseigne la Biologie du D\u00e9veloppement (L1-M2) \u00e0 l\u2019UFR des Sciences d\u2019Orsay (Universit\u00e9 Paris-Sud, 2000- ). J\u2019ai cr\u00e9\u00e9 un module de Master en Biologie du D\u00e9veloppement (64 heures) \u00e0 Universit\u00e9 du Costa Rica \u00e0 l\u2019occasion d\u2019un s\u00e9jour sabbatique en 2010. Je suis int\u00e9ress\u00e9 par l\u2019innovation que j\u2019exp\u00e9rimente avec un projet en p\u00e9dagogie active invers\u00e9e en Licence (2017-). Je participe \u00e0 des actions de promotion de la science aupr\u00e8s du public (e.g. f\u00eate de la science, Aquarium de la porte Dor\u00e9e, 2019).<\/p>\n<p>D\u2019un point de vue administratif, j\u2019ai r\u00e9alis\u00e9 plusieurs missions d\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat collectif (Commission de sp\u00e9cialistes (2005-2009), Direction des Relations internationales (UPSud, 3 ans, 2012-2015), Conseil National des Universit\u00e9s (65, 2 mandats, 2012-2019) au cours desquelles j\u2019ai assur\u00e9 diff\u00e9rentes fonctions de secr\u00e9tariat (bureau, CSE), de gestion (charg\u00e9 de mission, dispositifs de bourses Masters pour \u00e9tudiant \u00e9trangers) et d\u2019\u00e9valuation (membre nomm\u00e9, CNU).<\/p>\n<h4><strong>B\u00e9n\u00e9dicte Charrier, Station Biologique, Roscoff<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4123 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sfbd.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Photo_Bio_Charrier_300dpi-274x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"300\">I am particularly keen on flouting conventional concepts to raise new hypotheses by working on organisms phylogenetically distant from metazoans, fungi and plants. Brown algae are especially suitable for this. I have been studying their development in Roscoff, Brittany in the past 15 years. Currently, I set my sights on the mechanisms controlling planar patterning in the blade (~ leaf) of the large kelp Saccharina (a large brown seaweed laid on Atlantic beaches at low tide). At that stage, we observed that rectangular cells of the tissue monolayer divide by alternating perpendicular cell division plans, which results in cells perfectly aligned edge to edge, corner to corner. This is a unique situation in plant organisms and I presented these initial data at the recent \u201cSelf-organisation in multicellular systems\u201d meeting organised by CENTURI in Carg\u00e8se in October 2019. We plan to study this patterning through a modeling approach (a vertex model implying the growth dynamics and the mechanical properties of the cell is in progress). I also work on tip growth and branching in the microscopic filamentous brown alga Ectocarpus and our last two papers report a visco-plastic model of tip growth ( Rabill\u00e9 et al. P Lo S Biol 2019), and a comparative analysis of the branching strategies between moss, fungal and brown algal filaments (Coudert et al., Curr Biol in press). I have also contributed to develop the topic of macroalgal development at the European level, through networking and dissemination of collective knowledge. I chaired the European COST Action \u201cPhycomorph\u201d (2015-2019), I co-edited a book of updated protocols for the study of seaweed biology (\u201cProtocols for Macroalgae Research, CRC Press 2018) and I co-edited the first European guidelines for a sustainable and eco-friendly aquaculture of seaweeds presented at the EU parliament (project \u201cPEGASUS\u201d, May 2019). I am currently (2017-2021) co-coordinating the R\u00e9seau Andr\u00e9 Picard, which gathers teams from Sorbonne Universit\u00e9 and the MNHN that study developmental biology of land and marine models.<\/p>\n<p>Beside this brief description of my current research, I give below some details about my career: I am a 50-year old CNRS DR2, P.I. of the team \u201cMorphogenesis of Macroalgae\u201d since 2009 (UMR8227 Laboratory of Integrative Biology of Marine Models, Roscoff). I studied plant molecular and cellular biology at the University Paris-XI, Orsay (1991-1992), defended my PhD on alfalfa-Rhizobium symbiosis in Gif\/Yvette (1996) and performed a post-doc in Leeds University (U-K) on transcriptional gene silencing in tobacco (1996-1999). Recruited in 2000 as a CNRS researcher in the Institut de Biotechnologie des Plantes, Orsay, where I worked on the role of the GSK3\/Shaggy kinases in arabidopsis development and stress, I moved 4 years later to Roscoff to initiate a new project and make the big jump: study morphogenesis in the smelly, gooey and rather shapeless organisms that are brown algae.<\/p>\n<p>Why apply to the SFBD board? The field of developmental biology, which requires long-term studies and pluridisciplinary approaches, is a discipline particularly impacted by the recurrent lack of funding and support from our country. Hence, the motto \u201cstronger together\u201d becomes increasingly acute and timely for our community. I can share my experience in scientific animation and, by maintaining its breath and diversity, contribute to keep SFBD visible and attractive to the early-stage researchers, thereby securing its durability.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>J\u00e9r\u00f4me Gros, Institut Pasteur, Paris<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1958 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sfbd.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Jerome_GROS-238x300.jpg\" alt=\"J\u00e9rome Gros, secr\u00e9taire g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Fran\u00e7aise de Biologie du D\u00e9veloppement\" width=\"209\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sfbd.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Jerome_GROS-238x300.jpg 238w, https:\/\/sfbd.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Jerome_GROS.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Je termine donc mon premier mandat et suis candidat \u00e0 ma r\u00e9\u00e9lection. Je dirige depuis 2012 une \u00e9quipe de recherche au sein du d\u00e9partement de biologie de d\u00e9veloppement et cellules souches, \u00e0 l\u2019Institut Pasteur. Les th\u00e9matiques de recherche de mon laboratoire sont profond\u00e9ment ancr\u00e9es dans la tradition d\u2019embryologie classique tout en alliant la mise en \u0153uvre et le d\u00e9veloppement de techniques et m\u00e9thodologies les plus modernes. Nous avons ainsi d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 dans le laboratoire la caille comme animal mod\u00e8le g\u00e9n\u00e9tique. La cr\u00e9ation de lign\u00e9es de caille transg\u00e9niques combin\u00e9e \u00e0 des approches de vid\u00e9o-microscopie nous permet de capturer la dimension cellulaire et dynamique du d\u00e9veloppement embryonnaire. Nous utilisons une approche multidisciplinaire \u00e0 l\u2019intersection entre l\u2019embryologie, la g\u00e9n\u00e9tique, la biologie cellulaire et la biophysique pour comprendre comment morphogen\u00e8se et diff\u00e9rentiation cellulaire sont coupl\u00e9es au cours du d\u00e9veloppement pr\u00e9coce.<\/p>\n<p>Depuis mon \u00e9lection en 2017 j\u2019ai pu participer aux actions de la SFBD telles que l\u2019\u00e9valuation des prix de th\u00e8se, bourses de voyage et subventions des \u00e9v\u00e8nements. Depuis le d\u00e9but de l\u2019ann\u00e9e 2019 j\u2019ai endoss\u00e9 la responsabilit\u00e9 de secr\u00e9taire g\u00e9n\u00e9ral et je m\u2019occupe d\u00e9sormais des formalit\u00e9s administratives et organisationnelles qui sont n\u00e9cessaires au fonctionnement de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9. Les membres du conseil d\u2019administration et l\u2019impulsion donn\u00e9e par Patrick, notre pr\u00e9sident, font de la SFBD un groupe de travail dynamique et enrichissant auquel je serai ravi de continuer \u00e0 contribuer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Sophie Jarriault, IGBMC, Strasbourg<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Mon \u00e9quipe \u00e9tudie les m\u00e9canismes mol\u00e9culaires et cellulaires qui permettent \u00e0 une cellule sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9e de maintenir son identit\u00e9 sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9e au cours du temps, ainsi que les m\u00e9canismes qui permettent, dans certaines circonstances, de changer cette identit\u00e9 sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9e. Pour cela, nous utilisons des mod\u00e8les in vivo de reprogrammation naturelle directe que nous avons d\u00e9crits chez le ver C. elegans. Nous examinons en particulier quels r\u00e9seaux g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques sous-tendent ce processus et quel est leur impact sur sa robustesse et timing invariant, comment l\u2019identit\u00e9 initiale est verrouill\u00e9e puis d\u00e9verrouill\u00e9e, si certaines cellules sont plus comp\u00e9tentes \u00e0 changer d\u2019identit\u00e9 que d\u2019autres, et quels principes g\u00e9n\u00e9raux sont conserv\u00e9s entre diff\u00e9rents \u00e9v\u00e8nements de reprogrammation.<\/p>\n<p>Agir pour le dynamisme de ma communaut\u00e9 scientifique, favoriser les interactions entre \u00e9quipes partageant des int\u00e9r\u00eats scientifiques communs et b\u00e2tir des outils pouvant servir \u00e0 tous m\u2019a toujours sembl\u00e9 tr\u00e8s important. Dans ce sens, j\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 heureuse de participer au travail de diverses commissions intervenant dans la vie de la communaut\u00e9 scientifique de biologie cellulaire et du d\u00e9veloppement, comme la commission CNRS 22 (2010-2012), la commission nationale 3 de l\u2019ARC (2012-2015) ou le conseil scientifique de l\u2019INSB (2015-2019). D\u2019autre part, afin de regrouper les jeunes \u00e9quipes europ\u00e9ennes travaillant avec le mod\u00e8le n\u00e9matode, j\u2019ai initi\u00e9 et dirig\u00e9 un r\u00e9seau international qui comprend 136 \u00e9quipes de l\u2019ERA, et pour lequel j\u2019ai obtenu des financements europ\u00e9ens (COST BM1408, EMBO) qui ont permis de multiples actions au sein de ce r\u00e9seau et au-del\u00e0.<\/p>\n<p>Je voudrais continuer \u00e0 apporter ma pierre \u00e0 la communaut\u00e9 scientifique et envisage pour cela ma participation au CA de la SFBD, car la SFBD est un moyen puissant de porter et soutenir les besoins et enjeux de notre communaut\u00e9. Je serais ravie de contribuer \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper les interactions internationales, ou nationales avec d\u2019autres partenaires; ou encore de contribuer \u00e0 des actions de m\u00e9diation scientifique, de sensibilisation aupr\u00e8s de diff\u00e9rents constituants de notre soci\u00e9t\u00e9 aux enjeux de la recherche fondamentale (par ex aupr\u00e8s des parlementaires ou des \u00e9coles formant les futurs cadres de notre nation), ou aupr\u00e8s des professeurs du secondaire (un engagement ancien puisque je participe \u00e0 plusieurs actions aupr\u00e8s du grand public depuis de nombreuses ann\u00e9es, comme les actions annuelles DECLICS).<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Ma\u00ebva Luxey, Universit\u00e4t Basel, Suisse<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4111 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sfbd.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Luxey_Maeva.jpg\" alt=\"Maeva Luxey, candidature au conseil d'administration de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 fran\u00e7aise de biologie du d\u00e9veloppement\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\">Chercheuse associ\u00e9e, depuis 2017, dans l&#8217;\u00e9quipe \u201cRegulatory Evolution\u201d du Pr. Patrick Tschopp \u00e0 l&#8217;Universit\u00e9 de B\u00e2le (Suisse), je m\u2019int\u00e9resse \u00e0 la plasticit\u00e9 du syst\u00e8me neuromusculaire des<br \/>\nmembres des t\u00e9trapodes.<\/p>\n<p>Depuis le d\u00e9but de ma carri\u00e8re scientifique, je m\u2019int\u00e9resse aux m\u00e9canismes mol\u00e9culaires responsables du d\u00e9veloppement de membres fonctionnels chez les t\u00e9trapodes : d\u2019abord, en \u00e9tudiant le r\u00f4le de mol\u00e9cules de guidage axonal des neurones moteurs et sensoriels dans les membres chez la souris lors de mon doctorat dans l\u2019\u00e9quipe du Dr. Alice Davy (CBD-CBI, Toulouse) puis en post-doc au Canada dans l\u2019\u00e9quipe du Pr. Jacques Drouin (IRCM, Montr\u00e9al, Canada) o\u00f9 j\u2019ai acquis des comp\u00e9tences en prot\u00e9omique et techniques de s\u00e9quen\u00e7age (NGS) permettant d\u2019identifier les facteurs mol\u00e9culaires responsables de l\u2019identit\u00e9 des membres. Alliant cette double expertise, j\u2019explore maintenant dans l\u2019\u00e9quipe de Pr. Patrick Tschopp (Universit\u00e9 de B\u00e2le, Suisse), la pertinence \u00e9volutive de ces concepts en y combinant des technologies d\u2019imagerie de pointe (microscopie \u00e0 nappe de lumi\u00e8re et reconstruction 3D) avec une embryologie exp\u00e9rimentale classique principalement chez le poulet et la souris.<\/p>\n<p>Je suis membre de la SFBD depuis mon doctorat, et c\u2019est gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ce soutien que j\u2019ai notamment pu, \u00e0 travers ses actions de financement de bourse de voyage, pr\u00e9senter mes travaux lors de<br \/>\nconf\u00e9rences de la SFBD ou de Gordon Conference.<\/p>\n<p>Je propose donc ma candidature au conseil d\u2019administration de la SFBD pour \u00e0 mon tour m\u2019investir en participant \u00e0 ses actions, au maintien et d\u00e9veloppement des opportunit\u00e9s pour les jeunes chercheurs (bourses de collaborations, workshops). Je dirige depuis 2009 une \u00e9quipe \u00e0 l\u2019Institut de Biologie du D\u00e9veloppement de Marseille (IBDM). Nous nous concentrons sur les m\u00e9canismes temporels permettant de favoriser puis limiter l\u2019auto-renouvellement des cellules souches (essentiellement neurales) lors du d\u00e9veloppement. Nous essayons \u00e9galement de comprendre comment la manipulation de ces m\u00e9canismes temporels peut favoriser la r\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9ration, ou au contraire comment leur perturbation peut induire des cancers d\u2019origine d\u00e9veloppementale, tels les cancers p\u00e9diatriques. Notre mod\u00e8le d\u2019\u00e9tude est principalement la drosophile, et aussi depuis peu l\u2019embryon de poulet. Nous prenons avantage des nombreux outils permettant de manipuler l\u2019expression des g\u00e8nes chez ces deux organismes mod\u00e8les, tout en combinant diverses approches d\u2019imagerie, transcriptome de cellules uniques et mod\u00e9lisation num\u00e9rique.<\/p>\n<p>Lors de ce mandat au CA de la SFBD, je me suis impliqu\u00e9 en essayant notamment d\u2019am\u00e9liorer la communication au sein de la communaut\u00e9 par l\u2019interm\u00e9diaire d\u2019une lettre mensuelle r\u00e9capitulant les actions de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9, les \u00e9v\u00e8nements \u00e0 venir concernant la bio-dev, et les offres d\u2019emploi. J\u2019ai effectu\u00e9 cette tache de Janvier 2017 \u00e0 Juin 2018 en collaboration avec Sophie Vialar. J\u2019ai \u00e9galement particip\u00e9 au jury qui a d\u00e9termin\u00e9 le prix de th\u00e8se 2017, \u00e9valu\u00e9 diff\u00e9rentes demandes de bourses de voyage, et particip\u00e9 aux diff\u00e9rentes discussions qui traversent le CA tout au long de l\u2019ann\u00e9e. Depuis le d\u00e9but de l\u2019ann\u00e9e, et pour la deuxi\u00e8me fois, je suis co-organisateur du prochain congr\u00e8s SFBD-ShapingLife qui aura lieu \u00e0 Cassis du 12 au 15 Mai 2020. Durant ces 3 derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, j\u2019ai pu mesurer et appr\u00e9cier l\u2019enthousiasme de mes autres coll\u00e8gues du CA pour structurer notre communaut\u00e9, mettre en valeurs nos travaux et faire entendre notre voix au sein de la communaut\u00e9 scientifique et de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 civile. En parall\u00e8le, j\u2019ai observ\u00e9 comment les avanc\u00e9es technologiques et la multidisciplinarit\u00e9 r\u00e9volutionnent notre mani\u00e8re d\u2019aborder notre discipline, permettant de r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 de vieilles questions avec une compr\u00e9hension plus globale et d\u2019en soulever de nouvelles. La philosophie de nos travaux est de combiner la g\u00e9n\u00e9tique mol\u00e9culaire, la biologie<br \/>\nstructurale et la bio-informatique pour r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 des questions d\u2019\u00e9volution et de d\u00e9veloppement chez les plantes. Notre \u00e9quipe s\u2019int\u00e9resse en particulier \u00e0 des facteurs de transcription floraux.<\/p>\n<p>J\u2019appr\u00e9cie \u00e9norm\u00e9ment le travail accompli par la SFBD tant pour la communaut\u00e9 de biologie du d\u00e9veloppement en France que pour le lien avec les autres soci\u00e9t\u00e9s savantes et avec d\u2019autres composantes de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 fran\u00e7aise. Au sein de la SFBD, j\u2019ai jou\u00e9 jusqu\u2019\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent le repr\u00e9sentant v\u00e9g\u00e9tal et j\u2019aspire \u00e0 poursuivre d\u2019assumer ce r\u00f4le. Comme mes mod\u00e8les d\u2019\u00e9tudes, j\u2019ai des p\u00e9riodes de dormance ou de croissance v\u00e9g\u00e9tative o\u00f9 mes autres taches m\u2019accaparent trop pour \u00eatre tr\u00e8s actif mais je fais de mon mieux pour contribuer activement \u00e0 la vie de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9, je m\u2019implique dans les s\u00e9lections de prix de th\u00e8se ou de bourse de voyage, je suis un acteur dans la diffusion scientifique tous publics et j\u2019ai \u00e0 mon actif la modernisation de la communication entre les membres avec l\u2019ouverture d\u2019un groupe Slack. Je continuerai \u00e0 aider la SFBD \u00e0 fonctionner et \u00e0 innover en participant activement aux r\u00e9unions et en proposant des actions.
