In 2018, the SFBD thesis prize was awarded to Mathilde Dumond for her doctorate entitled: “From cellular variability to shape reproducibility:
mechanics and morphogenesis of Arabidopsis thaliana sepal”. Her work has been published in  Developmental Cell<\/a> in 2017 as well as Current Biology <\/a>in 2017 and Current Biology<\/a> in 2016. Mathilde Dumond did her thesis under the direction of Pr. Arezki Boudaoud and Dr. Olivier Hamant in the laboratory \u00ab Reproduction et d\u00e9veloppement des plantes \u00bb<\/a> at the ENS, in Lyon. <\/p>\r\n\r\n

Au cours de son doctorat, Mathilde Dumond a abord\u00e9 une question cruciale en biologie du d\u00e9veloppement: comment les organismes assurent la reproductibilit\u00e9 de la forme et de la taille des organes au cours du d\u00e9veloppement. Elle a abord\u00e9 cette question en utilisant comme mod\u00e8le les nombreux s\u00e9pales (la couche protectrice du bourgeon floral) produits par une seule plante d’Arabidopsis thaliana. Gr\u00e2ce au grand nombre de s\u00e9pales produits par chaque plante, elle a pu caract\u00e9riser finement la structure de leur variabilit\u00e9 morphologique \u00e0 l’\u00e9chelle des organes et des cellules et la relier aux propri\u00e9t\u00e9s m\u00e9caniques des cellules qu’elle a mesur\u00e9es par microscopie \u00e0 force atomique. Elle a ensuite construit un mod\u00e8le de calcul en tenant compte des propri\u00e9t\u00e9s m\u00e9caniques des cellules pour expliquer la forme des s\u00e9pales et leur reproductibilit\u00e9. Ses r\u00e9sultats montrent d’une part que les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s m\u00e9caniques informent sur la forme globale des organes. Plus \u00e9tonnamment, elle a trouv\u00e9 que les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s m\u00e9caniques des cellules individuelles sont tr\u00e8s variables et son mod\u00e8le pr\u00e9dit que cette variabilit\u00e9 \u00e0 l’\u00e9chelle cellulaire est n\u00e9cessaire pour assurer la reproductibilit\u00e9 de la forme et de la taille des organes, par un processus de moyennage spatio-temporel. Ainsi, l’identification d\u2019un mutant augmentant la variabilit\u00e9 des formes de s\u00e9pales a montr\u00e9 une variabilit\u00e9 spatiale r\u00e9duite \u00e0 l’\u00e9chelle cellulaire. Ce travail original et pluridisciplinaire \u00e9tablit ainsi que la variabilit\u00e9 \u00e0 l’\u00e9chelle cellulaire peut permettre le d\u00e9veloppement reproductible d’un organe, et qu’une diminution de cette variabilit\u00e9 cellulaire est d\u00e9l\u00e9t\u00e8re pour l’organisme.<\/p>\r\n

Le jury a \u00e9t\u00e9 impressionn\u00e9 par l’impact conceptuel de ce travail, qui combine la mod\u00e9lisation computationnelle, la mesure des propri\u00e9t\u00e9s m\u00e9caniques locales et la g\u00e9n\u00e9tique du d\u00e9veloppement. Ce travail montre que l’exploration de ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes mal compris dans des syst\u00e8mes mod\u00e8les peu \u00e9tudi\u00e9s, ici l’Arabidopsis s\u00e9pal, peut conduire \u00e0 une compr\u00e9hension g\u00e9n\u00e9rale de la logique d\u00e9veloppementale. <\/p>\r\n\r\n
